For the third year, FOS helped teach the course Adaptive Protected Area Management to approximately 50 undergraduates in the International Forest Ecosystem Management Program and 20 master’s students in the Global Change Program at Eberswalde University, Germany. During this intensive 5-day course, students focus on Steps 1 and 2 of the Open Standards, using German protected areas as case-studies. Delivered by FOS and a senior co-teacher from the European network of coaches, this course is a strategic investment in three different areas: 1) training of “tomorrow’s leaders”; 2) fostering young coaches and senior course teachers; and 3) applying adaptive management in various conservation initiatives through thesis-work and internships. Course evaluations continue to show that the course is very well received and helpful in shaping the professional outlook of students.
