Bernd has worked for and with international conservation and philanthropic organizations—mostly in the U.S. and Asia and the Pacific—for more than 25 years. He is currently a Program Officer at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, where he helps manage its Oceans and Seafood Markets Initiative. He also spent 12 years at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation where he led both the Western Pacific coastal marine conservation program and the Marine Birds Initiative.

Bernd holds an A.B. in diplomacy and world affairs from Occidental College, and a Master of Public Policy Studies and a Master of Arts in Southeast Asian studies, both from the University of Michigan.

Bernd has served as a member on the FOS Board of Directors since our inception. He also serves on the boards of two other organizations: the Micronesia Conservation Trust and Multiplier.
